Professional leadership training and events for the eastern region

NPQH

The National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) was introduced in 1997 as a national qualification to prepare teachers for running a school. It is a practical qualification, firmly rooted in school improvement which prepares candidates thoroughly for their first headship post.

The programme itself
The NPQH programme is underpinned by the National Standards for Headteachers and is run by the National College for School Leadership. It draws on the best leadership and management practice inside and outside education and is based on supported self-study, giving accessibility to busy teachers in all types of school. By offering a range of modern blended learning opportunities (such as face-to-face events, online learning, study materials, visits to other schools), as well as both peer and tutorial support, it is both practical and challenging. Focused on school improvement, the programme sets rigorous standards, and by building on previous achievements and proven ability, it enables participants to fully develop their leadership and management capabilities.

On 1 April 2004, it became mandatory for all first-time headteachers in the maintained sector to hold NPQH or to have secured a place on the programme.

The existing programme model is being replaced with a new model, to begin early in 2008. If you would like further information please follow the link to the National College for School Leadership
