Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)
Following workforce reform to raise standards and tackle classroom workloads, Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status was introduced in 2003. HLTAs work in schools alongside teachers, providing valuable support for teaching and learning activities.
The HLTA programme is available to school support staff in England who have the agreement of their headteacher or line manager to participate. A set of professional standards form the basis of the HLTA Programme. These Standards identify what candidates need to demonstrate in order to be awarded HLTA status.
To ensure these standards are met, and in order to support the role of a HLTA, the HLTA Programme aims to prepare support staff to:
- Work more closely with their class teachers, and on occasion using their own initiative, work more independently of them; this involves ensuring that support staff can confidently make decisions for themselves knowing that they are well grounded in the policy and practice of their school and nationally accepted effective practice,
- Teach whole classes, when needed, with the guidance of a qualified teacher and be able to undertake the range of teaching processes independently.
Both of the above competences are grounded in reflection and evaluation of their own and observed practice.
