Professional leadership training and events for the eastern region

Leading from the Middle

"This programme is under Government review at present, and until announcements are made, there are no further programmes planned. Please check in the future for latest updates."

'Leading from the Middle' is the first national programme for middle leaders, written to support the first of the National College’s 5 stages of leadership – the emergent leader. It is designed to improve and develop the leadership effectiveness of middle leaders across schools and within their specific context. Leading from the Middle is appropriate for any middle leader with leadership responsibilities including, amongst others, subject leaders, pastoral leaders, SENCOs and advanced skills teachers.

Middle leaders taking part in the programme with ELC will be supported in the following five key areas of leadership development:

  • leadership of innovation and change;
  • knowledge and understanding of their role in leading teaching and learning;
  • enhancing self-confidence and skills as team leaders;
  • building team capacity through the efficient use of staff and resources; and
  • active engagement in self-directed change in a blended learning environment.

  • The programme itself undergoes continual renewal to ensure it meets the needs of today’s middle leaders.
