Programme Structure & Costs

"This programme is under Government review at present, and until announcements are made, there are no further programmes planned. Please check in the future for latest updates."

Key Concepts
Leading from the Middle is a programme designed to identify and develop the leadership skills and behaviours of middle leaders. Participants will deepen their knowledge and understanding of the role of the middle leader through a process of self-directed change within a blended learning environment. The programme itself consists of:

  • local face-to-face learning sessions; (3 full days and 2 1/2 day twilights focusing on Self Awareness, Self Development and Leading and Managing Change)
  • coaching sessions in school supported by the leadership coach;
  • the preparation of a practical school based leadership development focus;
  • the use of ICT in the virtual school; and
  • access to a range of on-line learning materials to support participants.
  • Participants will work in learning sets, consisting of between 2 and 4 teachers from each school, working together with a Leadership Coach who is school-based and in the main a member of the senior leadership team.

    Programme costs
    From September 2009, schools are required to contribute £530 per middle leader, whilst National College subsidies the reminder of the cost of the programme. There is no additional charge for the support and training of the Leadership Coach, however schools will be required to pay any supply and travel costs incurred by coaches and participants during the programme. Payment for participants will be required before the start of the programme.

    All costs for participants from schools with fewer than 100 pupils (on the January 2010 census return) are met by the National College, including an allowance for supply and travel costs.
    Additional information about the programme is available on the following website produced by the National College. This site contains further information for middle leaders, coaches and headteachers.
