Professional leadership training and events for the eastern region

NCSL/ELC Internship Programme

This programme ran from March 07 - June 07

Throughout the Eastern region over 45 schools participated in a pilot programme funded by NCSL. The Internship model was based upon an exchange programme, where two colleagues exchange schools for one week.

The objective was to learn about the way the head and leadership team of the placement school operate. The interns needed to get to grips with their placement school very quickly. They were expected to observe lessons, track pupils, participate in assemblies and, very importantly, shadow leadership team members including the head.

The ELC pilot programme was rolled out in partnership with NCSL across the East of England, other partners included Special Schools Group and Norfolk Leadership Academy.

The schools participated with extremely positive outcomes. This programme has been seen as a useful tool in succession planning, with many school links being continued after the programme ended. Interns were asked to complete a Learning Record to capture their learning and experience. Typical comments received have included:

  • ‘After NPQH, this has been the best professional development I have had in my career so far.’
  • ‘The programme has been an invaluable experience for me as an aspiring leader.’
  • ‘The programme had a great impact on me and has helped to increase my aspiration to becoming a head teacher.’
  • ELC is proposing to continue to offer support for succession planning. To find out more please email emma.greenwood@elc-cambridge.org
