
Middle leaders (including subject leaders, middle managers, heads of department, heads of year and curriculum co-ordinators) play a crucial role in developing and maintaining the nature and quality of the pupils’ learning experience and ensuring schools achieve their desired outcomes for learners. Middle leaders also play a pivotal role in a school’s strategy to distribute leadership effectively. In order to ensure effective leadership and management at all levels middle leaders now play a key role in leading learning and teaching, monitoring and evaluation and in leading teams through change.

Helen joined ELC having previously worked in the following roles: teacher, deputy headteacher, headteacher, local programme advisor and regional programme leaders. With over 30 years’ experience in the sector, Helen is the ideal practitioner to lead our exciting range of programmes for middle leader.
Whilst a headteacher, Helen acted as a Primary Strategy consultant, the lead professional for a Primary Strategy learning network and as mentor to headteachers in their first two years of headship. She was part of the pilot scheme for school improvement partners and contributed to the Sustaining Successful Schools programme.
Helen says, “My previous role as a primary headteacher gave me the experience as a practitioner to consider and reflect upon both the theoretical and practical aspects of leadership and to influence the work of the middle leaders and other staff, demonstrated by achieving an ‘outstanding’ judgement in our Ofsted inspection.”
Helen believes, “Strong and effective leadership to be the key to ensuring a successful school that genuinely meets the needs of children and achieves high-quality teaching and learning.”
